Intercity Shopping Centre has acquired a new Target.
The Thunder Bay mall’s current Zellers store could become a Target sometime in 2013.
The Target Corporation released an initial list Thursday of 105 Zellers locations across Canada the corporation will be acquiring the leases from, including the Intercity site.
“The vast majority of those are going to become Target stores,” said spokesperson Sarah Van Nevel, adding the takeovers are real estate transactions.
“We’re not acquiring any of (Zellers’) technology, any of their business or any of their employees. We’re just strictly taking over the lease of the building,” she said.
Each Canadian Target will employ 150 to 200 people and Van Nevel said they will be engaging with current Zellers employees to make sure it’s easy for them to apply for jobs at Target.
The stores will continue to operate as Zellers for the immediate future, but will be closed for six to nine months for significant remodeling before opening as Target stores.
Each remodeling is expected to cost about $10 million and will create “a significant number of construction jobs,” states a release issued by the Target Corporation.
Target acquired the Zellers chain from the Hudson Bay Company in January for $1.8 billion.
