TBayTel to add 3G network over two years

TBayTel is rolling out a new third generation wireless network across Northern Ontario, a decision company president and CEO Don Campbell said will close the technology gap between the region and other areas of Canada.

“Our customers will benefit from improved access to high-speed wireless voice and data services, a broad base of handset technology and smart phones and increased capabilities for high-speed mobile data. Delivering competitively priced advanced telecom solutions to Northern Ontario is a key corporate end for our company,” Campbell said in a release issued by the company on Wednesday night.

The 3G HSPA network will be deployed in Thunder Bay, Kenora and other communities in the region in 2010, with further deployment in more remote areas and along highways to be completed in 2011.

Michael Power, chairman of the TBayTel Municipal Services Board, said adding the networks shows the company’s commitment to the North.

“Our success as a company is dependent upon the success of Northern Ontario and our new 3G HSPA network demonstrates TBaytel’s commitment. We live here, we work here and we are very proud to be investing in its future,” Power said.
