TBPS, MTO use drone in traffic enforcement blitz on Dawson Rd.

The Highway Traffic Act dictates that a commercial vehicle cannot be within 60 metres of another vehicle when driving at a speed exceeding 60 kilometres per hour.

THUNDER BAY — Drones were sent to monitor traffic during a commercial vehicle safety blitz on Dawson Road.

During an enforcement project with the Thunder Bay Police's traffic unit and the Ministry of Transportation, a drone was used to monitor commercial vehicles along the roadway for following too closely under the Highway Traffic Act.

The act dictates that a commercial vehicle cannot be within 60 metres of another vehicle when driving at a speed exceeding 60 kilometres per hour.

Additional road space between the vehicles will also allow for more stopping time and distance for larger vehicles.

During the one-day blitz, police laid 33 charges.

For commercial vehicles, the charge carries a fine and four demerit points for the driver, in addition to five commercial vehicle operator's registration points for the company.
