THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra could bring home some hardware from this year's Juno Awards.
The TBSO is nominated for Classical Album of the Year: Large Ensemble for the 2019 Juno's for the Into the Wonder album, which was released last year.
The album was six years in the making, as its origins date back to 2012. The recording features the orchestra playing with Gryphon Trio, with the music composed by composer Jordan Pal.
Past music director Arthur Post said it was an exhilarating experience to perform and record Pal's music.
“From my first encounter, I was attracted to his music’s compositional integrity," Post said in a Tuesday afternoon statement released by the TBSO.
"Here was new music animated by logical and natural progressions, music that embraced traditional tonality, pulse, and expression, while displaying a distinctly 21st century sonic brilliance.”
The TBSO said the project was financed by local investors and included a grant from the Ontario Arts Council. The album was recorded live in the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium in March 2016.
The nomination page on the Juno website notes that the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra is one of the most remotely located symphonies in Canada, with Thunder Bay the smallest city in the country to host a full-time professional orchestra.
The album is one of five nominees in the category.
The Juno Awards ceremony will be held on March 16-17 in London, Ont.
The album can be purchased as a CD through the TBSO office, at any TBSO performance or online.
