Automatic Licence Plate Recognition technology was responsible for Nipigon Ontario Provincial Police seizing a stolen car on Friday.

Officers were patroling Highway 11/17 when a cruiser's roof-mounted camera captured the image of the vehicle's license plate. The system compared the plate to a Ministry of Transportation database and found the vehicle to be stolen.

Three occupants in the vehicle were arrested.

A 31-year-old Winnipeg man and a 22-year-old Winnipeg woman were charged with Possession Of Property Obtained By Crime Over $5,000, two counts of Possession Of Property Obtained By Crime Under $5,000, Possession Of Break-In Instruments and Failure To Comply With Probation Order.

The male was also charged with Driving While Disqualified and an additional count of Failure To Comply With Probation Order.

Another occupant was an unknowing hitchhiker who had been reported missing. The Nipigon Children's Aid Society assisted in returning the young person home.
