THUNDER BAY -- City police arrested a 17-year-old driver after he crashed into parked vehicles and fled from officers Tuesday evening.
Officials with the Thunder Bay Police Service say the teen driver has been charged with eight criminal charges.
Those charges stem from an incident that took place just after 8 p.m. Jan. 29. Police say a white car was spotted driving at a high rate of speed on May Street. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but it struck two parked vehicles in the Bay and Water Streets area.
The motorist drove away from the scene. Police called off their pursuit of the vehicle because of public safety concerns.
Police say the vehicle's registration led them to a Hodder Avenue area home. Officers saw the same white car and began another pursuit on Marion Street.
The car hit a curb and officers were able to pin the vehicle on Strathcona Avenue.
The driver was immediately arrested.
An investigation revealed that the teen suspect took the family vehicle without permission and was under a court order not to drive.
The 17-year-old suspect has been charged with the following offences:
- Dangerous Operation Of A Motor Vehicle
- Flight From Police x2
- Disqualified Operation of A Motor Vehicle
- Fail to Stop At The Scene Of An Accident
- Take Motor Vehicle Without Consent
- Breach of Probation
He was also charged under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act with:
- Fail to Remain
- Fail to Stop for Police
He will appear in court Wednesday.
