A weather system over northwestern Ontario smashed long-standing records for high temperatures in several communities over the weekend, and more records could be broken later in the week

Environment Canada reports that new marks were established in Thunder Bay, Kenora, Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, Fort Frances, Geraldton and Pickle Lake.

At Thunder Bay's airport, a temperature of 16.6 C on Saturday broke the previous record of 16.1 set 70 years ago.

But meteorologist Jeff Coulson said what happened in Fort Frances and Geraldton on Sunday was even more remarkable.

"We had some pretty incredible readings," Coulson said . "Fort Frances got up to 21.8 degrees ... shattering the old record of 17.8 set back in 1975."

In Geraldton, he added, yesterday saw "another amazing temperature" of 20.1 degrees, breaking the previous mark by almost six degrees.

Coulson said the weather forecast currently calls for a high of 15 C in Thunder Bay on Thursday. The existing record for that day is 13.9 C.

The normal high for this time of year at the Lakehead is only 3 C.
