City of Thunder Bay news release follows:
April 16, 2015 – A West Frederica Street tenant and a South Court Street tenant have each been ticketed for disabling a smoke alarm. Each ticket carries a fine of $360.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to each residence last week for separate incidents. In one case a hardwired smoke alarm had been removed, and in the other case a smoke alarm had been covered with a plastic bag.
“It’s simply unacceptable to disable a smoke alarm,” said Fire Chief John Hay. “Thunder Bay Fire Rescue has a zero-tolerance policy regarding smoke alarm violations. Only a working smoke alarm can give you the time needed to escape a fire emergency.”
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds residents that it is the law to have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Carbon Monoxide alarms are required to be installed outside any sleeping area if your home has a fuel fired appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage.
