THUNDER BAY – A brief strike involving a group of local caregivers appears to be resolved.
The United Food and Commercial Workers, representing about 75 workers for HAGI Community Services for Independence, struck a tentative collective bargaining agreement with the organization on Friday, putting an end to a strike that began on Wednesday.
Workers hit the picket lines at six locations across the city after months of negotiations failed to deliver any results. The caregivers had been working without a contract since September.
The two sides had engaged in conciliation and mediation in the weeks leading up to the strike.
Earlier this week union officials said the primary point of contention was that workers had not seen a wage increase since 2009.
Support workers provide essential daily services, ranging from bathing to bringing people out into the community.
It is believed the deal will be presented for ratification for both sides on Sunday.
