The countdown to Ribfest is on

Our Kids Count’s executive director says there is lots of excitement and things to look forward to.

THUNDER BAY — The Half-Way Motors group was excited to announce on Tuesday that Ribfest is only 100 days away.

The free festival, not including the cost of food, will run Aug. 21 to 24 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with takeout only on the first day.

Returning to its ‘picnic in the park’ theme, it will feature professional "ribbers", live entertainment, local food vendors, a kids’ zone and more for thousands of visitors daily.

“Last year, which was really nice, families came and stayed for the day. They came, they brought their blankets (and) they participated in activities,” said Jackie Knough, Our Kids Count’s executive director.

“There was lots of live entertainment on the stage that was really centred around families, which is awesome. So, we’re hoping for the same, some really good weather and people to come out and enjoy the ribs and support Our Kids Count.”

Similar to last year, she said they will have bouncy castles, face painting and all the fun activities they usually bring, which they’re “really excited about.”

“We’re going to fit as many as we can into the space at the marina,” said Knough.

A few surprises are also in store for Ribfest, added Knough, with a few people who haven’t been a part of Ribfest before and they will try to do a carnival day with balloons, clowns and more for kids.

“We’re just looking forward to bringing the community back together and we’re thankful for the city for allowing us to be back at the marina and always a big thank you to Halfway Motors Group for being our presenting sponsor again this year,” said Knough.

Daniel Trevisanutto, a co-chair of Ribfest, said the event will be very family-friendly and child-friendly and they’re looking forward to everything they have in store.

“We’ll have something for everyone. So, you can grab some ribs, grab a seat, bring a blanket if you like and just watch some of the great local performers that are going to be coming out to perform for us,” said Trevisanutto.

If ribs happen not to be your thing, he added that they're going to make sure there’s options and something for the entire family.

However, the details are still being finalized, he said, so nothing they can talk about quite yet.

“All the ink is still drying on a couple contracts and agreements with everybody, but it’s something we’re going to be announcing pretty soon. Keep an eye on the website and all the social media as those come to light,” said Trevisanutto.

He said they are also really excited to be back at Marina Park once again.

“The city has been fantastic at welcoming us into this space and it just works so much better than we could have hoped. For our vendors there’s great power supply, it’s much greener space, which has been such positive feedback we received last year from everyone, and why we’re so excited to come back here again this year,” said Trevisanutto.

“You’re right beside Lake Superior looking out. We’ve got the breeze coming in that just helps blow all that rib smoke and all that flavour into your face as you’re in line up waiting for those ribs. So it’s a great space.”

As always, Trevisanutto thanked all the sponsors who help make Rib Fest happen.

“Keep an eye on those. Take a look at those businesses that are always making things happen in our city,” said Trevisanutto.

“And if you are one of those businesses that want to get involved, there are still opportunities where we can make sure you’re front and centre in Thunder Bay and the public. So, give us a show.”

Knough said they are also launching their 50/50 draw on Tuesday, one of their biggest ways to raise money through the event.

Residents seeking more information and 50/50 tickets can visit the Our Kids Count’s website.
