THUNDER BAY — The number of COVID-19 cases in district hospitals has fallen over the past few days, adding to recent evidence that the sixth wave of the pandemic may be weakening.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Tuesday reported that 34 people infected with the virus are currently in hospital, including one in intensive care.
This is a drop of six from Friday, when there were 40 hospital patients with COVID including four in ICU.
The number of hospitalizations peaked at 65 on May 5.
The health unit reported 95 new positive test results across the district since Friday, but due to the resolution of other cases, the active case count fell from 228 to 208.
Public health authorities continue to caution that the actual number of active cases is likely much higher, since PCR testing is limited to vulnerable groups only, and because the results of rapid antigen tests are not included in the calculation.
