THUNDER BAY -- The start of the shipping season on Lake Superior is being hampered by thick ice near Sault Ste. Marie.
The ice jam has left ten freighters unable to move, including one that had a hole punched in its hull.
A Canadian icebreaker is joining other American vessels to clear the ice on Whitefish Bay.
Coast Guard officials say the problem was caused by warmer air and westerly winds which loosened the ice and pushed it around Whitefish Bay.
Some of the vessels have been stranded since Sunday.
The first ship for Thunder Bay's port was originally expected to arrive last night. It's now delayed until this weekend.
