THUNDER BAY – A third case of COVID-19 has been associated with Westgate CVI, Lakehead Public Schools announced Saturday.

While it’s the third case announced at the James Street high school in less than a week, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has refrained from declaring an outbreak at the school, saying the case is unrelated to two others announced on Monday and Friday.

“At this time, there is still no evidence that the virus has spread in the school setting,” the school board said in a statement Saturday.

According to provincial guidelines, an outbreak is declared when a school has two or more confirmed cases among students, staff, or other visitors within a 14-day period, where the two cases are linked and at least one could have reasonably acquired their infection at school or a related setting.

The board is working with the health unit to investigate and manage any possible exposures at the school or related settings such as bus transportation, it said.

Anyone identified as a close contact will be contacted directly by a public health nurse, and will be required to stay home and not return to the school until cleared by public health.

Additional measures could be taken as the public health investigation continues over the coming days, the board said.
