Threads of Life holds Steps for Life fundraiser walk

This is the first walk they've been able to do in person since the pandemic

THUNDER BAY – Despite the rainy weather, dozens of residents took part in a 5-kilometre walk, all wearing bright yellow shirts as a part of the Steps for Life Fundraiser for Threads of Life, an organization that supports families who have been affected by workplace tragedies.

This is the first walk they've been able to do in person since the pandemic and the fundraiser set a goal of 5 thousand dollars that, thanks to the support of the Thunder Bay community, they were able to more than double.

"We originally set our goal for 5 thousand dollars, and through the donations, through the various people in the community, the organization committee, and our walkers here today, we've actually just reached the goal of over 12 thousand dollars this year,” said Robert Popien, member, organizing committee.

“I can only see it getting higher next year as the word gets out about this event."

Thunder Bay mayor, Bill Mauro, also stopped by and spoke about the importance of prioritizing the health and safety of employees. He mentioned that it's an issue that needs continued profile and attention and that events that bring awareness to workplace tragedies help save lives.

"The people that spoke today, y'know, did a great job of putting the focus on workplace accidents and prevention, but when they do occur, trying to have an organization and individuals who are there to support the families that are left behind,” said Mauro.

Threads of Life does not reach out to families who have been affected by workplace tragedies, those families must take the initiative to reach out to them.
