THUNDER BAY — Under the threat of a postal strike, the District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board will implement an alternative delivery method for provincial assistance cheques that normally arrive in the mail.

Clients who usually receive Ontario Works benefit cheques and statements through Canada Post will have to retrieve their cheques for October at the board's main office, at 231 South May Street, on Sept. 27 or Sept. 28 between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

TBDSSAB said the October cheques will not be mailed regardless of whether postal workers go on strike next week.

Canada Post has not made a commitment to deliver provincial assistance cheques in the event of a strike, a board statement said, and TBDSSAB  needs "to ensure clients receive their assistance."

Cheque recipients must show valid government-issued ID.

Ontario Works clients who are on direct bank deposit will still receive their money through that method.

Recipients served by TBDSSAB satellite offices are advised to contact their local office about cheque pickup procedures and locations.

Landlords will be able to pick up cheques on Oct. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The board said it will provide updated information on its services in the event of a strike on its website and through its social media platforms.

The earliest possible date for a postal strike is Sept. 26.
