THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay Airport has set another new record, following an upward trend in passenger traffic for the first six months of this year.

From January until June, there have been over 404,000 passengers travelling through the local airport terminal.

This is the airport's fastest start to a year ever.

The numbers exceed last year's passenger traffic volume by 5.6 per cent.

President and CEO of the Airport Authority, Ed Schmidtke, says there's no single reason for the jump in numbers, but he says many of the airlines have been offering travellers cheaper tickets and more flight availability.

“We are watching the demand,” Schmidtke said. “We’ve never seen capacity like this and given that we’ve never seen it we are still watching to see if it’s stable.”

“There are certainly a lot of good prices out there and if the business cases are there for all the carriers to continue then we are going to certainly see the consumer benefit from that.”

Several airlines using the Thunder Bay airport have recently added capacity, to accommodate for the rise in volume and are expected to reduce tickets prices as well.
