The waters near Thunder Bay made the cover as the city and area earned high praise from readers of Lake Superior Magazine and LakeSuperior.com.
Nine Thunder Bay businesses earned the magazine’s 2015 Best of the Lake honors and the city itself was chosen as a Best Weekend Destination along with Red Rock, Ontario.
Results of a survey of visitors and locals around all four shores of Lake Superior have just been published in the August/September issue, now on the newsstands.
The magazine asked for reader choices in 12 categories, with winners chosen for each Lake Superior state and province: Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin and Ontario. More than 650 print magazine readers, website followers and fans of area establishments cast their votes by mail or online. Hotly contested were categories like Best Burger or Best Pizza – and the magazine expects people to continue to weigh in on those top picks.
The Ontario winners (first and second place) are:
• Best Scenic Overlook: Sleeping Giant Provincial Park and a tie between Terry Fox Monument, Thunder Bay, and Lloyd’s Lookout, Red Rock
• Best Restaurant/Café: Hoito Restaurant, Thunder Bay, and Red Rock Marina Restaurant
• Best Campground: Ontario Provincial Parks (Lake Superior region) and Chippewa Park, Thunder Bay
• Best Pizza: Both Hands Pizzeria & Bakery, Thunder Bay, and a tie between Chuck & Gene’s Pizza Machine, Sault Ste. Marie, and Papa Piccolino’s Pizza, Thunder Bay

“Our Best of the Lake reflects the choice of people who really have eaten, stayed or enjoyed these locales,” says Lake Superior Magazine Editor Konnie LeMay. “Sometimes the readers surprise even us. It’s great fun every year to see the top choices.”
Best of the Lake voting takes place throughout the year at www.LakeSuperior.com. Winners of the Best of the Lake receive clings and certificates that announce the honor and can often be found on their establishment windows or walls.
