Stay off the ice.

That the message Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is sending to area residents as this region finally gets a taste of spring-like weather.

In a news release issued by the city Friday afternoon, officials from Fire Rescue confirm that ice conditions are quickly deteriorating, and that there are already areas of open water becoming visible on some waterways.

“Water currents erode ice from underneath making it impossible to tell how thick it actually is,” said Fire Chief John Hay.  “Slippery shorelines and river banks should also be avoided.”

Any accident involving submersion in icy cold water could cause hypothermia and paralysis within minutes and ultimately be fatal.
