THUNDER BAY - A house fire earlier this month in Thunder Bay has resulted in the property-owner getting a ticket for a smoke alarm violation.

Firefighters responded to a blaze at a Mapleward Road residence on Sept. 3.

All the occupants were able to escape safely, and the fire was extinguished quickly, with damage confined to an exterior balcony.

Investigators determined that the source of the fire was careless smoking.

They also discovered there was no working smoke alarm in the home.

The ticket for not having a functioning smoke alarm on every level of a residence and outside all sleeping areas carries a fine of $360.

Ontario law also requires carbon monoxide alarms to be installed outside any sleeping area if a residence has a fuel-fired appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage.
