THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay Hydro is warning customers of a billing scam.
The company has been getting reports from local restaurants of callers claiming to be from the hydro termination department. A number with an 807 area code is given and when called, is answered by someone claiming to be the Thunder Bay Hydro Billing Department.
"Because utility companies do contact their customers by phone regarding past due accounts, these callers are taking advantage of the difficulty of knowing whether the call is real," a media release from Thunder Bay Hydro says.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call demanding immediate payment and believes they aren't in arrears should call Thunder Bay Hydro at 343-1111 to validate the call.
Payment would never be required through pre-paid credit cards and the company says anyone with questions about payment methods should visit its website.
