WINNIPEG — A Thunder Bay man has died after being assaulted in Stony Mountain penitentiary north of Winnipeg.

36-year-old Nathan Otke succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

He had been in critical condition in a Winnipeg hospital since Jan. 1 when he was found unresponsive in his cell.

According to Manitoba RCMP, the assault was reported in the early hours of the morning of New Year's Day.

Police have announced no arrests so far.

The RCMP's major crimes service and forensic identification service are still investigating.

In August 2020 Otke was arrested by Thunder Bay Police following reports that a shoplifter at the West Arthur Street Walmart claimed to have a gun.

He was charged with robbery with violence, resisting a peace officer, and four counts of breach of probation.
