Update: Suspected home takeover investigation leads to arrest of Brantford teen

THUNDER BAY - A Brantford male youth is facing several firearm charges following an investigation into an alleged home takeover case.

Thunder Bay police say they responded to a Pearl Street address just after 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22. Officers were investigating a suspected home takeover possibly linked to drug trafficking activity, according to a police media release.

Officers learned there was an unwanted male inside the home and located a 17-year-old youth and a handgun inside a bathroom of the home.

The teen who cannot be named due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act appeared in court on Friday morning, Oct. 23, and was formally charged with various firearm offences including possession of a firearm or a weapon obtained by crime.

The teen was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court next on Monday, Oct. 26.

Police on Thursday arrested a Brantford youth who was in Thunder Bay and in possession of a handgun.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Community Oriented Response (COR) Unit attended a residential address in the 200 block of Pearl Street just after 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22. Their attendance was part of an ongoing investigation into suspected home takeovers involving individuals possibly linked to the drug trafficking trade.

Police learned there was an unwanted male inside the home. Officers located a 17-year-old male and a handgun inside a bathroom of the home.

The teen was arrested without further incident.

A 17-year-old Brantford, Ont., male is charged with:

• Possession of a Firearm or Weapon Obtained by Crime
• Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon
• Careless Storage of a Firearm
• Possession of a Firearm with Knowledge its Possession is Unauthorized
• Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition

The youth is expected to appear in bail court on Friday, Oct. 23.

The accused cannot be named in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
