Thunder Bay Police Zone Watch will target impaired drivers

The incidence of impaired driving has worsened the last two years

THUNDER BAY -- The latest Zone Watch initiative by the Thunder Bay Police Service will aim to reduce impaired driving in the city.

The campaign will be launched Tuesday afternoon at the Outpost, the campus pub at Lakehead University.

Police say impaired driving, whether caused by alcohol or drugs, has been on the rise in Thunder Bay the last couple of years.

"It is discouraging to see that, despite the constant messaging by police services and organizations that impaired driving is incredibly dangerous and entirely preventable," said Constable Mark Cattani of the TBPS Traffic Unit.

Cattani said it's even more disheartening that Thunder Bay saw an increase in the number of intercepted impaired drivers in both 2016 and 2017.

The campaign, he said, will engage citizen Zone Watch members to come up with new ideas for combatting impaired driving.

Police have described Zone Watch as a program that engages Thunder Bay police officers directly with the community on issues of neighbourhood crime and community safety in order to develop solutions.

More than 100 citizen volunteers are currently enrolled in Zone Watch.
