THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay schools are taking steps to show support for the people affected by Friday's disaster involving the Humboldt, Saskatchewan junior hockey team.

The Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board says it is standing together with schools across the country and remembering those who were tragically taken from their families in the bus accident.

In a statement, the board said "many of us are parents and teachers of athletes; we are all too familiar with the amount of travel time our children and students take to attend tournaments. This tragedy hits extremely close to home."

On Thursday, April 12, separate school board students, staff and educators will wear a hockey jersey or the colour green in remembrance of the accident victims.

Schools such as St. Margaret will also be selling persians, with the proceeds to be donated to the Humboldt GoFundMe campaign.

A spokesperson for the Lakehead District Public school Board said "pretty much every school" in the system is doing something Thursday in support of the  Saskatchewan town and the survivors of the accident victims, with events such as jersey days, donation collections and some bake sales.

The money that's raised will go to the current GoFundMe campaign.
