Thunder Bay sees slight increase in new home builds last month

THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay is continuing to see a slight increase in new home construction around the city.

THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay is continuing to see a slight increase in new home construction around the city.

According to officials from Canada Mortgage and Housing, Thunder Bay saw 32 new home starts during the month of August, 22 of those single-detached houses. The other ten were multi-unit residences.

In August of last year, there were just four multi-unit starts, along with 22 single family homes. For the year-to-date, there have been a total of 149 new home starts, compared to 129 last year.

CMHC Market Analyst Warren Philp said the despite the apparent increase, the continued weakness in local employment levels and a cooler resale market for older homes will limit new home starts over the last four months of the year.
