The lone Thunder Bay contestant in a national spelling bee has finished in ninth place out of 21 contestants.

Margarita Wilson, a Grade 7 student at Nor'Wester View School, was eliminated in the seventh round of the 2011 Canspell National Spelling Bee in Toronto.

Wilson was defeated after incorrectly spelling the word gambrel.

Her ninth-place finish is the highest of any Canspell contestant from Thunder Bay.

Meanwhile, Toronto's two-time defending champion Laura Newcombe won the competition for the third straight year.
