THUNDER BAY -- The World Deadlifting Counsel held its annual Silver Dollar Deadlift World Championship last week..

The Silver Dollar Deadlift is one of the original tests of strength and has been around since the 1800s. Recently, the world record has been held at 1222 pounds, but in this year's event the world record was broken by four athletes.

Thunder Bay's Ben Thompson lifted 1270 pounds to set a new open class world record, and hold off the 46 other athletes competing to retain his title as Silver Dollar Deadlift World Champion.

The event lasted the month of April and submissions were submitted virtually with strict rules so international athletes did not have to travel due to COVID-19.
