THUNDER BAY -- The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has presented its 2017 Anti-Bias Award to Lakehead District Public School board teacher Lisa Dampier, in recognition of her work in teaching global citizenship and social justice.

Dampier is a Grades 7 and 8 teacher at Westmount Public School.

She established a Learning Academy in which her students learned about different cultures and important world issues, and developed respect for differences.

According to an ETFO news release, they studied the negative impacts of bias, racism and stereotyping, in the process developing compassion and acceptance of others.

Students also learned about different religious and cultural celebrations, explored equity issues such as availability of clean water, and repaired and restored bicycles for local needy children.

ETFO President Sam Hammond said "What's exciting is that Lisa embedded this focus on global citizenship and social justice across the curriculum in all subjects."

The award was announced Tuesday at the federation's annual meeting in Toronto.
