UPDATED 2:45 p.m.: Thunder Bay Transit service suspended after threat

Police have detained a person who may be connected to the threat.

THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay Police are questioning an individual in connection with a threat that was made Wednesday morning against Thunder Bay Transit.

All buses were pulled from service and evacuated after a bomb threat was received around 9:30.

In a brief statement, police said they have detained a person who may be connected to the threat, but the investigation is continuing.

They said there is no current threat to public safety, but transit service remained suspended as of 11:10 a.m.

Local Amalgamated Transit Union President Fred Caputo told Dougall Media that police are sweeping all buses that were in service as well as those in the transit garage on Fort William Road.

Caputo said later that transit service is not expected to resume until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

That has now been confirmed in a statement from the city.

The statement described the situation as "contained."

It said the city appreciates passengers' patience and understanding during the suspension of service.

In an interview, Thunder Bay Transit Manager Brad Loroff said the individual who made the threat had indicated there was "some type of device" somewhere on a bus.

Transit management can communicate simultaneously with all operating buses, so it was quickly able to bring the 32 vehicles that were on the road at the time to a halt and have them evacuated.

Loroff was unable to estimate how many passengers were inconvenienced.

"Certainly it was disruptive for our customers," he said, noting that prior to the pandemic Thunder Bay Transit normally carried about 19,000 passengers a day.

Loroff said this was a serious incident that affected "a lot of people," adding "we're glad that it had a safe outcome, and hopefully it's something we won't see again."
