THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay has its eye on hosting the 2024 Ontario Winter Games.

City administration will recommend submitting a bid for the games, which features athletes 12 to 18 years of age competing across over two dozen sports, at the next city council meeting on Nov. 9.

This year’s event, held in the Orillia area in February, drew more than 3,000 participants, organizers estimated.

The recommendation from administration will include approving, in principle, $250,000 in costs distributed between the 2023 and 2024 budgets, as well as an in-kind contribution of up to $50,000.

Those investments would only be necessary if the city is selected as the 2024 host.

Should Thunder Bay prove unsuccessful, administration suggests pursuing the opportunity to bid instead for the 55+ Games the same year.

The city recently celebrated the successful hosting of the 2020 Special Olympics Winter Games, which took place here in February.
