CALGARY -- Thunder Bay defender Kendra Fortin has been invited to take part in Canada's women's national hockey team under-18 camp in Calgary later this summer.

Fortin, 18, who will be a freshman at Bemidji State University this fall, was invited to last year's camp too, but because of COVID-19, was unable to participate in on-ice activities.

“My family and I are proud and honored to be selected to the Under-18 roster again this year and I am really looking forward to participating in camp, especially after being out of competition for the last year and half,” said Fortin in a release posted by Bemidji State.

“I am excited to get a chance to compete at the highest level further develop as a player as well as to shake the rust of and really be prepared to begin my Bemidji State hockey career.”

Fortin played for the Etobicoke Dolphins of the Provincial Women's Hockey League last season, but was mostly limited to developomental work and one-on-one instruction. She also spent two seasons with the Thunder Bay Queen's

Hockey Canada director of operations Gina Kingsbury said it's a great chance for camp invitees to test their skills against the top young players in Canada.

“As with the rest of our athletes, the pandemic has limited the on-ice opportunities for this group, and we know this camp will provide a great opportunity for these athletes to get familiar with Canada’s National Women’s Program and to participate in a highly-competitive camp before heading to school for the upcoming season,” Kingsbury said.

The camp, open to those born in 2003 or later, begins on July 29.
