ATIKOKAN, ON — The Atikokan municipal employee facing a number of theft-related charges no longer works for the town.

Atikokan Mayor Dennis Brown confirmed Tuesday that Peter Burbeck's employment has been terminated.

The 44-year-old had served as Director of Public Works.

On April 2, Rainy River District OPP announced charges had been laid following the execution of a search warrant and an extensive investigation involving property that allegedly belonged to the town.

According to police, one of the items is a snowblower.

Burbeck was charged with theft over $5,000, possessing proceeds of crime over $5,000, trafficking in property obtained by crime, and multiple counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm as well as careless storage of firearms and ammunition.

None of the charges have been proven in court. The accused has a court date next month in Atikokan.

Mayor Brown said the town expects to post the job vacancy soon.
