Ontario towns and cities that pay for OPP service are watching the latest contract negotiations very closely to see if the province can avoid years-of-service bonuses that communities say are becoming difficult to afford.
The benefit, known as retention pay began in Toronto a little over a decade ago and is now part of most police and firefighter contracts across the province.
It gives officers a three percent pay hike after eight years of service, six pe rcent after 17 years and nine percent after about 23 years.
But neither the government nor the Police Association are saying if retention pay is on the table as they begin negotiating a new deal.
