Transatlantic sailor from Thunder Bay reaches the Azores Islands

Dan Turk has been sailing alone across the ocean for 21 days, but it's still a long way to Portugal

LAJES DAS FLORES, AZORES ISLANDS — A Thunder Bay sailor's epic voyage across the Atlantic Ocean has taken him to the Azores Islands, but Dan Turk still has a considerable distance to go.

After embarking on a solo journey from Halifax three weeks ago, Turk reached the community of Lajes das Flores, on Flores Island, on Tuesday morning.

In a brief message to TBnewswatch, he said he was resting to make up for lost sleep and preparing to set off Wednesday for his next destination, Horta, on Faial Island.

Turk said In a subsequent social media post that included photos from Flores that he had enjoyed the hospitality on the island, which included free docking and free showers.

He was expecting to arrive at Horta in his home-built, 5.8 metre boat, Little Bea, sometime early Thursday.

But after spending 21 days alone on the water, the veteran sailor will still have about 1,800 kilometres to go before he reaches his ultimate destination — Portugal.
