UPDATED: Transport truck collision scatters debris for 200 metres on Highway 17 (2 Photos)

A truck driver from Winnipeg has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act

VERMILION BAY, Ont. — One person is reported to have suffered minor injuries when two tractor-trailer units collided on the Trans-Canada Highway just east of  Vermilion Bay on Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. EDT near Waldhof Road.

The side of one of the trailers was ripped open as the two trucks sideswiped each other.

The Machin volunteer fire department reported neither vehicle was carrying dangerous goods.

One was transporting a variety of household items, while the other was hauling a load of tires.

Machin Deputy Fire Chief Dan Robinson said the impact left debris from both trailers scattered on the roadway for a distance of about 200 metres.

Highway 17 was closed in both directions until the debris was removed, allowing police to reopen it initially to one lane before fully reopening the road.

Late Wednesday afternoon, OPP announced they had charged a 27-year-old man from Winnipeg under the Highway Traffic Act section that references "Unsafe Move Lane or Shoulder."
