THUNDER BAY -- A city garbage crew got an unexpected surprise – and unscheduled delay – on Friday afternoon.
Their truck spent the better part of an hour wedged into an unexplained sinkhole that opened up underneath them as they completed their route along Arundel Street, across the street from Strathcona Golf Course.
It took several city workers, two tow trucks and a backhoe to dislodge the truck, stuffed with trash, from the hole.
A city worker on scene, who couldn’t speak on the record, said they plan to use a camera to determine the sinkhole’s cause, noting it was not because of a water main break.
The hole was about seven feet long, three or four feet wide and up to two feet deep.
A spokesperson from the city's roads division said a statement on the condition of the road would be made available on Monday.
