TTC orders 60 more Rocket cars from local Bombardier plant

The Toronto Transit Commission has ordered another 60 Rocket cars from the Thunder Bay Bombardier plant.

The Toronto Transit Commission has ordered another 60 Rocket cars from the Thunder Bay Bombardier plant.

The contract is on top of the original contract for 420 Rocket cars already being built in the city and it will secure 180 jobs, said Bombardier Transportation spokesman Marc-Andre Lefebvre.

"This new contract will represent continued work for our Rocket employees up until 2015," he said.

The $160 million contract represents the increase in demand for public transportation in Toronto, said Lefebvre.

Unifor Local 1075 president Dominic Pasqualino was pleased with the additional order

"Without these additional 60 cars, probably by the end of the year we would have completed (the original order)," he said.

"It would have meant layoffs by the end of the year."

Pasqualino added he hopes this extension will give the plant more time to acquire new contracts.
