Two arrested in first murder of 2018

A 28-year-old man was killed Monday night and police have charged 45-year-old Christopher Achneepineskum with first-degree murder.

THUNDER BAY – City police say a 28-year-old man is Thunder Bay’s first homicide victim of 2018.

In a release issued on Wednesday, police say they arrived at about 2:30 p.m. on Monday at a motel in the 400 block of Cumberland Street North.

The victim was taken to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, where he was declared dead. His name is not being released at this time, pending the notification of next of kin.

Christopher Achneepineskum, 45, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He appeared court via video on Wednesday morning and was remanded into custody.

Achneepineskum will return to court on Feb. 15.

A 36-year-old female was also taken into custody and charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.

She is not being identified until she makes her first court appearance on Thursday.

A post-mortem is scheduled for the victim on Thursday in Toronto.
