THUNDER BAY – Two more people have died as a result of complications from COVID-19.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Tuesday announced the latest deaths, bringing the district to 35 since the pandemic began. There have already been five deaths in March attributed to COVID-19, two more than in all of February.
The health unit also announced 58 new cases, but with 60 resolved, the region’s active case count dropped to 458. There have been 470 cases announced in the first nine days of March, putting the district on pace to shatter the monthly record of 645, set in February. Of the 470 cases, 258 are considered close contact, a 54.8 per cent rate.
Thirty-seven of the cases are considered close contact cases, while six have no known exposure and 15 are pending. Fifty-four of the cases reside in Thunder Bay and surrounding area, while the other four live in First Nations communities.
Thunder Bay Regional announced a drop in COVID-19 patients hospitalized, down seven to 44 on Tuesday. Thirteen of those patients are in the intensive care unit, two fewer than a day earlier. The hospital is presently at an 83 per cent occupancy rate.
