Two people airlifted to Thunder Bay following head-on collision near Sioux Lookout

SIOUX LOOKOUT, Ont. - A serious motor vehicle collision near Sioux Lookout on Saturday has resulted in several people being sent to hospital, two with serious injuries who were airlifted to Thunder Bay. 

According to an Ontario Provincial Police media release, emergency responders were called to reports of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 72 east of Cedar Point Drive on Jan. 19 just after 9 p.m.

Police said a SUV and a pickup truck collided head-on and the Sioux Lookout Fire Department had to extricate the driver of the SUV.

Both drivers received serious injuries and were airlifted to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further treatment.

Three other passengers in the pickup truck also required medical attention. Police said none of the injuries are considered life threatening.

The collision resulted in the closure of Highway 72 for more than 12 hours. It has since been reopened.

Sioux Lookout OPP is investigating the cause of the collision.
