Police confirmed that a two-year-old girl involved in a vehicle-pedestrian collision on the city’s south side Tuesday afternoon has died.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers said Wednesday that the collision near Dease Street resulted in the death of two-year-old Kylie McKay, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said an SUV ran the child over in front of her family home as the vehicle was pulling away. Police said the driver of the SUV was a relative who was dropping Kylie off at her home when the collision took place.

Police arrested him a short time later at his home. Officers questioned and later released him without charges.

Barricades were up on North Vickers Street Tuesday at about 4:30 p.m. from Dease Street to Finlayson Street. A yellow tarp was covering what appeared to be a body on the west side of the street near an apartment building.

At first, it was believed that the incident was a hit-and-run. But police now say it appears to have been an accident. An investigation is ongoing.

A woman overheard to be identified as "the mom" by police was escorted to a place near the yellow tarp with others who identified themselves as family members to an officer near the barricade.
