Local youth who attend the Underground Gym will now be able to add a new skill to their repertoire.

The facility, which provides athletic and other activities for youth in need now has a garden in its backyard.

Gym owner Peter Panetta says they'll now be able to provide homegrown food in their free meals for youth. The kids will be able to get their hands dirty planting and growing the food alongside volunteers.

Donors put all the necessary money into the garden to ensure the kids can grow carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, corn, beans and some unique fruit like watermelon.

The 24-by-36 foot garden is designed to help youth learn how to provide for themselves growing up.

The facility also has a kitchen, music area, crafts and a tutoring program.
