THUNDER BAY — Investigators are waiting for gases to be cleared from the mine shaft where a fire broke out Friday night at the Musselwhite gold mine, 480 kilometres north of Thunder Bay.
Goldcorp says it can't determine the cause of the fire, the long-term impact on operations, and the nature of required repairs until the area is safe to re-enter.
For the time being, underground operations remain halted but surface operation continue.
No one was injured in the fire, which was discovered during a shift change.
Goldcorp issued a statement saying it carries comprehensive insurance for property damage as well as business interruption insurance to cover costs and lost profits.
The mine employs about 700 people including contractors.
