THUNDER BAY -- When Unifor heard the need for food in the community was growing they wanted to give back to a place that helped their members in their time of need.
The union stopped by the Regional Food Distribution Association with a donation for more than $11,000 Wednesday, pulled together by the national union and several locals.
"This year we were inspired when we heard recently that the food bank was expecting a greater amount of usage so we thought we could do something," National representative Andy Savela said.
It meant even more after a summer that saw Unifor members on strike at Bombardier, some of them having to rely on the generosity of the community. Savela said the ones who suffered the most also stepped up the most to give back.
"I think they have a greater appreciation for the hardships people have when they're struggling," he said.
RFDA kitchen manager said Christmas is the busiest time of year and there is always a need. She thanked Unifor.
"It's amazing," she said of the donation.
