THUNDER BAY – The United Way of Thunder Bay has set a slightly more modest goal for its 2017 campaign.
The charity organization on Thursday morning set a $2.55-million target, about $63,000 less than what it sought in 2016 and $18,000 less than it collected during last year’s campaign.
Campaign co-chairs Mike and Kelly Gallagher said they know the city is facing tough economic times, but are confident the public will come through this fall.
“We have set an amount that while still large, is responsible, realistic and attainable,” Mike Gallagher said in a statement.
“We ask our generous community to unite and work together to reach our goal.”
It won’t be easy, Kelly Gallagher said.
“We are acutely aware of the challenges that people face in our community. We know that one in three people receive help through a United Way funded program. For us, donating to the United Way Community Fun gives our family the opportunity to help other families in Thunder Bay,” she said.
The money goes a long way and is invaluable, said Jack Cleverdon, a member of the community impact council and someone whose organization benefits from the United Way's efforts.
"Without United Way funding, agencies won't survive," he said. "We need those dollars."
