United Way's Pretzel Day returns

A $5 order will get you a pretzel from Sweet North Bakery, one of two dipping sauces and an apple juice, all in support of the 2017 United Way of Thunder Bay campaign.

THUNDER BAY – They’re soft and tasty and if you and your colleagues order enough of them, the United Way will deliver them to your office, no questions asked and free of charge.

That’s right, the United Way’s second annual Pretzel Day, presented by Ontario Power Generation, is back, after selling out in their inaugural attempt a year ago.

Erinn DeLorenzi, co-owner of Sweet North Bakery, whose staff will stay up all night on Oct. 3 making 2,000 pretzels to fill this year’s orders, about 500 more than they made in 2016.

“Obviously the desire is there in the city to give and we want to do our part in accommodating that, making it possible for the United Way to raise as much money as possible,” she said on Tuesday.

“So we decided to push ourselves to our limits this year and just go for it and increase the numbers.”

For $5, the Court Street bakery will provide a plain, soft pretzel, complete with either a spiceman mustard or apple cinnamon dipping sauce. Each order will also be accompanied with an apple juice, courtesy of the Real Canadian Superstore.

With limited numbers and last year’s sold-out event as proof of how popular the pretzels are, DeLorenzi said the sooner one places an order, the better the odds of having it filled.

“These tasty treats will sell out fast,” she said.

Events like Pretzel Day are important for the United Way, which last week set a $2.55-million 2017 campaign goal, to help meet their annual fundraising target.

“They’re all important,” said Bell, the organization’s special event co-ordinator. “I always look at it as a piece of the puzzle. Every little piece makes the big puzzle and makes the goal more attainable.

Delivery, for orders of 10 or more pretzels, is available for pre-orders only, and must be requested no later than Friday.

Smaller orders may be picked up at Sweet North Bakery from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Oct. 4. The bakery will also be offering coffee for $1 for anyone picking up an order in store.
