THUNDER BAY -- A pickup truck driver has been charged with making an unsafe lane change following a collision that led to a major vehicle fire on the highway Monday.

Officials with the OPP’s Thunder Bay detachment say officers, along with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue firefighters and Superior North EMS paramedics, responded to the crash at the corner of Highway 11/17 and John Street just before 1:30 p.m.

Police say the driver of a car and truck were southbound on Highway 11/17 in the far left lane when they approached the intersection of John Street.

When the traffic light had changed to amber, the driver of the car remained in the far left lane while the driver of the Dodge truck switched lanes and drove onto the right lane and was struck from behind by the driver of another car.

The engine of the car erupted into flames and the vehicle was completely destroyed. There were no injuries reported.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 51 year old man from Thunder Bay was issued a ticket for making an unsafe lane change.
