NIPIGON, Ont. — The Ministry of Transportation and an engineering firm investigating the potential for an emergency detour route across the Nipigon River are preparing to tell the public what they have determined so far, and what the next steps will be.

A meeting is scheduled for Sept.13 at the Nipigon Community Centre.

In announcing the event, MTO and WSP Canada said the project team has completed the screening of "planning alternatives," and is now giving interested stakeholders a chance to review and comment on them.

Participants will also be able to review a draft Study Design Report which describes the planning process the MTO proposes to follow for the study.

The study was announced in September 2016 in the wake of the closure of the new Nipigon River Bridge after some bolts failed, severing the Trans-Canada Highway for about 17 hours. Nobody was injured in the incident.

The Sept. 13 meeting will take place in the Nipigon Community Centre between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
