THUNDER BAY – A Brock Street house suffered significant damage from a morning fire.

Firefighters were called to the Westfort area home before 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning to reports of a structural fire.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue platoon chief Brant Kiessig said the blaze appears to have started in the kitchen and the one occupant was able to safely evacuate the home.

“The kitchen was fully engulfed,” he said. “Crews arrived on scene and we got it knocked down quickly but there’s extensive smoke damage and extensive fire damage in the kitchen.”

The occupant was uninjured but one pet was lost.

Six pumpers responded to the scene.

The investigation is ongoing but Kiessig said early indications are the cause is accidental.
