THUNDER BAY -- No charges will be laid after a suspicious package was left outside a police substation on North Court Street.
In a release issued on Tuesday night, Thunder Bay Police say the person who placed a locked green ammunition box on the sidewalk contacted police, as did the owner of the box, who told police it contained medication.
Police then interviewed both people for more details.
"Based on the totality of the information, members of the TBPS removed and opened the ammunition box and confirmed the contents as medication. The box and contents were returned to their rightful owner. There are no charges contemplated in this investigation as no offence was committed," police said in a statement.
Police said they took extreme caution when the suspicious box, secured with a heavy padlock, was first discovered, at about 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
"Out of an abundance of caution and due to the dangerous nature of the ammunition box and what it could potentially contain, the decision was made to cordon off the immediate area and evacuate six nearby businesses," police said.
"This was completed with the cooperation and assistance of all persons who were either attending or operating these businesses. Further due to the nature of the ammunition box, the assistance of the OPP bomb unit based out of Kenora was requested."
Police remind the public that if they find suspicious packages to immediately turn them over to police to attend and investigate.
